Cue Sheet Generator: export and upload guide

What the Cue Sheet Generator does, how to export your timeline from Premiere Pro, Avid or Pro Tools, and how to upload it.

What is the Cue Sheet Generator?

The Cue Sheet Generator turns a timeline export from your editing software into a cue sheet with rights metadata. Upload an EDL from Premiere Pro or Avid Media Composer, or a .txt file from Pro Tools, and Slipstream matches your music against our catalog.

📌 Beta feature: The Cue Sheet Generator is currently in beta. We recommend using Chrome for the best experience.

Export your timeline, upload it, and get a cue sheet with Slipstream's music already filled in. Here's how to export it right.

How it works

Export your timeline from your editing software → upload the file to the Cue Sheet Generator → download your cue sheet as CSV or Excel.

  • Music from Slipstream's catalog: title, artist, writers and publishers are filled in automatically.

  • Other music: listed with its file name and timings, so you can add the rest by hand.

We only see what's in the file you export. That's why the export settings in this guide matter: if the song names arrive cut off or missing, we can't recognize your Slipstream music.

💡 The most important rule: the generator recognizes Slipstream music by the file name. Keep the names exactly as you downloaded them.

Rules for everyone

File names

These rules are for music from Slipstream. Music that isn't from Slipstream isn't in our catalog, so it's always listed with just its file name and timings, whatever it's called.

⚠️ Don't rename the files you download from Slipstream, and don't rename the clips in your timeline. If your export has no file names at all, no cue can be recognized.

Before you export

#

What to do

Why

Applies to

1

Make a copy of your timeline (in some programs it's called a sequence) and work on the copy

The next steps change the timeline, so your original stays safe

All

2

Keep only the music tracks (delete the layers with dialogue, sound effects and video)

Anything you export shows up in the cue sheet, so other sounds would appear as extra rows

All

3

Put all your songs on 2 stereo audio tracks (rows) or fewer

A Premiere Pro EDL only holds 4 audio channels, and each stereo track uses 2. Songs on extra rows are left out

Premiere Pro

4

Take the music out of nested sequences (a timeline placed inside another timeline) and put it back on the main timeline

Music hidden inside a nested sequence isn't exported as separate songs

Premiere Pro, Avid

5

Delete music clips that are muted or turned off

They're exported anyway and show up in the cue sheet, even though nobody hears them

All

6

Remove crossfades (where one song fades into the next), but only if the export fails or the times look wrong

They can break the export or move the times in the cue sheet

All

7

Check your frame rate (frames per second, for example 24, 25 or 29.97). Also check if it's "drop-frame", a special version of 29.97 and 59.94

You choose the same one in the generator. If it doesn't match, the times in the cue sheet come out wrong

All

Exporting an EDL

If you use Premiere Pro or Avid Media Composer, export an EDL: a file that lists the songs in your video and when each one starts and ends.

1. Premiere Pro

  • Export from: File > Export > EDL (click inside the timeline first)

  • Format: CMX 3600 (the window is called "EDL Export Settings (CMX 3600)")

Setting

Choose

Why

32-character names

On

Without it, names longer than 8 characters are cut off and the song isn't recognized

Use Source File Name

On

Writes each song's original file name, which is how the generator recognizes it

Include Original Audio File Name

On

Same reason: it adds the original file name of each audio clip

Drop Frame

Same as your timeline

If it doesn't match, the times come out wrong

Tracks To Export → Audio 1 to Audio 4

The channels of your music tracks (rows)

Only these 4 channels are exported

Include Video Levels / Include Audio Levels

Off

The cue sheet doesn't use them

⚠️ Premiere Pro exports 4 audio channels, which is 2 stereo tracks. Put all your music on 2 stereo tracks before exporting.

💡 In the timeline, click the wrench icon and turn on Show Source Clip Name and Label, so the clips show their original file names.

When the settings are ready, click OK, choose where to save the .edl file and click Save. That's the file you upload to the generator.

2. Avid Media Composer

  • Export from: Tools > List Tool

  • Format: CMX_3600 (in the Output Format menu)

Setting

Choose

Why

Input tab → Sequence

Drag your sequence in, or click Load

That's the timeline the EDL is made from

Input tab → Tracks

Turn on only the audio tracks (rows) with music

All tracks are on by default; other tracks would add rows that aren't music

List Options → Both Picture and Sound → Clip Names and Source File Name

On

They write each song's name and original file name, which is how the generator recognizes it

List Options → Sound → Dissolves

Off

Audio transitions aren't needed and can shift the times

Formatting → Optimize EDL

Off

With it on, only 4 audio tracks can be exported

Click Preview to check the list, then Save List > To one file, so you only upload one file.

💡 Media Composer writes the EDL in capital letters. That's fine: the generator doesn't care about upper or lower case.

3. DaVinci Resolve

⚠️ DaVinci Resolve isn't supported yet. Resolve's EDL export only includes one video track, so your music isn't in the file and the generator can't find it. We're working on accepting other file types.

Exporting from Pro Tools (.txt)

  • Export from: File > Export > Session Info as Text (the window is called "Export Session Text")

  • Format: text file (.txt) with the clips of each track and their times

Setting

Choose

Why

Include Track EDL's

On

This is the list of clips on each track with their times

All Tracks / Selected Tracks Only

Selected Tracks Only, after selecting your music tracks

Only the music is exported, so you don't have to delete other rows later

Time Format

Timecode

It comes set to Mins:Secs by default, and the generator can't read Mins:Secs, Bars|Beats or Samples

Include File List / Include Clip List / Include Markers / Include Plug-In List

Off

The cue sheet doesn't use them

Show Subframes / Include User Timestamps

Off

The cue sheet doesn't use them

File Format

Keep the default (TextEdit 'TEXT')

⚠️ Change Time Format to Timecode. It's set to Mins:Secs by default, and that's the most common reason a Pro Tools export doesn't work.

To check, open the .txt file and look at the START TIME and END TIME columns:

✅ Timecode (works)

❌ Won't work

01:00:00:18 (hours:minutes:seconds:frames)

0:05 (Mins:Secs) · 5| 1| 000 (Bars|Beats) · 586000 (Samples)

When the settings are ready, click OK, choose where to save the file and type a name. Pro Tools adds the .txt extension. That's the file you upload to the generator.

Good to know: if you check your file, you'll see each stereo song twice, once for the left channel and once for the right (_L, _R). That's normal; the generator combines them into one cue.

Upload your file

  1. Open the Cue Sheet Generator: log in at slipstreammusic.com, click your avatar, go to Profile and open the CueSheets tab. Drop your .edl or .txt file, or click choose a file.

  2. In Frame rate, choose the same one as your timeline.

  3. In Export, choose CSV or Excel.

  4. If you use the same song more than once, choose one of the merge options (see below).

  5. Click Generate. Your cue sheet downloads automatically when it's ready, usually in about a minute.

Generator options

When you upload your file, you can choose what to do when the same song is used more than once.

Option

What it does

Good to know

Merge overlapping identical clips

If the same song is cut into pieces that overlap or touch, it shows up once

Works best with all the music on one track: a clip on another track in between can keep the pieces apart

Use frame handles to find & merge identical clips

Same as above, but also joins pieces of the same song separated by a short gap (up to about one second)

Merge all identical clips

Each song shows up only once for the whole timeline

Duration is the total time the song is used; Timecode In and Out are those of its first use

Show disabled clips

Doesn't change anything yet

Muted or turned-off clips are always included

What's in your cue sheet

  • Track title, artist, writers and publishers

  • ISRC and album info

  • Timecode In, Timecode Out and duration for each cue

  • Music we don't recognize is still included with its file name and timecodes, with the rights columns left blank

Common problems

Export again, choosing your music tracks

A song has no title, writers or publishers

We didn't recognize it: the file name was changed

Use the original file name and export again

The times are wrong

The frame rate doesn't match, or Pro Tools isn't set to Timecode

Choose your timeline's frame rate. In Pro Tools, use Timecode

Some music is missing

Not all your music tracks were exported

Choose all your music tracks when exporting

The same song appears many times

Each use is listed separately

Use a merge option

The file isn't accepted

It's not an .edl or .txt, it's over 10 MB, or it has fewer than 2 clips

Export an .edl or .txt under 10 MB

Known limits

Things the generator doesn't do yet, so you know what to expect:

Limit

What it means for you

Artist for some library tracks

A few tracks have no artist in our catalog, so the Artist column can be empty. Writers and publishers are still filled in

Stems and alternate versions

The title shows the version name (for example, "Lite Mix Full B") instead of the song's main title

Owner, GEMA and Labelcode

These columns are in the file but always empty for now

Merge options with drop-frame timecode

Merged songs can be off by 2 frames (a fraction of a second) each time they cross into a new minute

Copies of a clip

With "Merge all identical clips", copies your program renamed (for example, .COPY.01) are listed separately
